Exploring the Lord Howe Market
|
Some months ago, the Chamber Executive held discussions with the Lord Howe Island Board CEO regarding potential trade opportunities (noting the Island Trader is due to sail from Port Macquarie when our new commercial wharf comes on-line). These discussions have continued and the Chamber is looking to compile a business directory of local businesses who are interested in entering the Lord Howe market. The directory will be delivered to all mail recipients on the island.
Lord Howe is clearly a tourism driven economy and home to 18 resorts/lodges. There is a variety of small stores on the island carrying groceries, liquor, fruit, vegetables, pharmaceuticals, clothing, home handyman products, souvenirs, snacks, arts and craft; a small hairdressing salon; and limited beauty and masseur facilities. Lord Howe Island is geared for outdoor recreation and recent tourism successes have resulted in increased construction and renovation. The Lord Howe Board has advised that goods and services currently imported include:
- fresh fruit and veg
- grocery lines
- meat
- construction/renovation and home handyman materials
- clothing
- sporting equipment
- alcohol
- professional services (training, banking, private medical and personal services)
- environmental Services
We encourage local business to explore this opportunity and list their products and services in the directory. If you are interested in having your business included, as a single listing or sponsor, please contact Chamber Executive Officer, Liesa Davies on executive@portchamber.com.au or tel: 02 6583 4412.

New Department of Planning Commercial and Industrial Code
|
Under the new NSW Department of Planning Commercial and Industrial Code, retail, office and industrial business owners can gain approval for a range of minor alterations and improvements in no more than ten days. The Code aims to cut unnecessary paperwork by introducing State-wide rules for internal fit-outs, minor works such as awnings and signage, and changing the use of premises, for example from one type of shop to another. Read more or register for a workshop to find out about the changes before the Code commences 7 September.
