Inaugural Boardroom lunch - REMINDER
The Chamber is hosting the inaugural Boardroom lunch at Rydges from 12.30pm on 28 May 2009.

Craig James is our keynote speaker and is sponsored by the Commonwealth Bank and Coastwide Pumping.

The Commonwealth Bank’s Chief Economist, TV and Radio personality, Craig attempts to demystify the state of the economy. He will take us on a trip through the surprises, challenges and possible rewards thrown up by the current economic environment. This is a session all businesses in Port Macquarie will not want to miss.

Book now to reserve your seats. Tickets are $77 for Chamber members and $88 for non-members.

RSVP to info@portchamber.com.au or call Kerry on 6583 4412.

Lord Howe Island
You will recall that with the imminent completion of the new wharf and the re-location of the Island Trader from Yamba to Port Macquarie we asked members who are interested in dealing with Lord Howe Island to contact us. The intention was to organise a session here in Port Macquarie introducing those members and island businesses. Unfortunately, the interest from Port Macquarie seemed to be greater than from Lord Howe.

Island businesses found it difficult to justify the expense of travelling to Port Macquarie given flight times and accommodation requirements. The response from those businesses makes perfect sense and ultimately creating a profitable trade between the two centres will depend largely on the initiative of individual members in Port Macquarie.

By way of background, Trevor Sargeant, the economic development manager from the Port Macquarie Hastings Council estimates trade between the two centres is around $22m. So there is a great deal of economic benefit for the region in pursuing this opportunity.

Accordingly, members who are interested in pursuing opportunities with Lord Howe Island should make direct contact either with the administrator or tourism association.

Contact details are:

New Members
We welcome our new members in April;
  • North Coast Commercial Doors – Jodie Burge
  • Westpac Rescue Helicopter Service – Michelle Pellew
  • Billabong Koala and Wildlife Park – Mark and Danena Stone

Since January 2009 the chamber has welcomed 21 new members. A further six applicants for membership have been received in May.

Our membership numbers are a key indicator of how we are performing. As at June last year we had 163 paid up members. This year we are on track to exceed 200 fully paid up members by the end of June.

We encourage you to refer new members wherever possible. Our voice is only as strong as our membership.

Expressions of Interest – NSW Dept. Of Planning
The NSW Department of Planning is calling for expressions of interest for State-appointed member positions on Joint Regional Planning Panels. More info on website http://www.planning.nsw.gov.au/planning_reforms/jrpp.asp Close 27 May

Glasshouse
At the last meeting the Board noted the opening of the Glasshouse is nearing and resolved that the Board supports the completion of the development and retaining it as a public asset. The Board is aware of the divisions within the Chamber and the broader community during the early stages of the development, however, notwithstanding those matters considers the Glasshouse will be a significant positive contribution to the cultural and economic life of Port Macquarie.

Foreshore
The board noted that the Foreshore seems to have slipped in priority with Council having regard to the current budgetary position. The Chamber has informed the Council it stands ready to assist and work with the Council to identify ways in which the vision for the foreshore can be implemented.
